Hugh Segal, is a Canadian political strategist, author, commentator, academic and former senator. He served as Chief of Staff to Ontario Premier Bill Davis and later to Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Segal resigned from the Senate of Canada effective June 15, 2014, as a result of his appointment as Master (later Principal) of Massey College in Toronto.

This week on Political Strips Bob speaks with Jennie Byrne and Michele Cadario about their work promoting better representation for women on Boards of Directors with organizations.
They have both transitioned their life long work in politics to dedicating themselves to help balance the representation of women.
Jenni Byrne is a political advisor for the Conservative Party of Canada and former advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She was once referred to as "the most powerful woman in Ottawa" and "the other woman" behind Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She also served as principal secretary to Doug Ford.
Michele Cadario was the first woman in Canada to run a national election as Campaign Director for the Liberal Party in 2004 following her success as National Director for Paul Martin’s leadership campaign. She served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Martin and was a key member of each of his transition teams. More recently she was a senior strategist in the 2013 & 2017 BC Libéral campaigns and Deputy Chief of Staff to Premier Christy Clark until 2017.

This week Bob speak with Alex Neve about his role as Secretary-General Amnesty International Canada. A position that he's held since January 2000.
They discuss how Alex got his interest in the work of Amnesty International, the work they do, and his upcoming retirement from the role.
This is a great conversation to gain a deeper understanding of the Amnesty International organization and its work.
Alex has been a member of Amnesty International since the mid-1980s and has worked for the organization nationally and internationally in a number of different roles, including missions to Tanzania, Guinea, Mexico, Burundi, Chad, Colombia, Honduras, Zimbabwe, Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa, South Sudan, Bangladesh, and Ghana. In Toronto, he has been affiliated with the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University and has taught international human rights and refugee law at Osgoode Hall Law School. He regularly lectures, participates in conferences and speaks and writes in the national media on a range of human rights topics. Before taking on the role of secretary-general in January 2000, he served as a member of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

The show is an interview that Bob had with famed author Erik Larson as part of Erik's tour promoting his new book "The Splendid and the Vile". They discuss the origin of the concept for the book, the creative process, and end off with some questions from the audience.
Erik Larson is the author of eight books, six of which became New York Times bestsellers. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied Russian history, language, and culture; he received a masters in journalism from Columbia University. After a brief stint at the Bucks County Courier Times, Erik became a staff writer for The Wall Street Journal, and later a contributing writer for Time Magazine. His magazine stories have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, and other publications.

Karen Ogen-Toews is the CEO of the First Nations LNG Alliance.
She was a founding member of the Alliance, and brings extensive experience to her role as CEO, having served as Chief of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation for six years.
She now sits on the nation’s elected council, holding the Natural Resource/Energy and Economic Development portfolios.
She is familiar with the needs of Indigenous communities throughout B.C., and seeks to increase economic opportunities for First Nations through providing information and education regarding responsible resource development.

Martin Kettle writes for the Guardian mostly on British, European, and American politics. He has worked on the Guardian since 1984 in several capacities, including as a columnist, classical music critic, political leader writer, Guardian Europe editor, and US bureau chief 1997-2001. He was chief leader writer 2001-6. He became an assistant editor of the paper in 1994.
